The first impression you may have of Moscow is of a chaotic city, with traffic jams even on their wide avenues. It is a city of contrasts as it boasts the most billionaires of any other city in the world but also sees many of it’s citizens live in crumbling buildings. This divide of wealth is evident where ever you look in the city. As you would expect from any city of 10 million people, there is so much to see and do so you can be sure whatever your reason for visiting Moscow, you are sure not to leave disappointed. Although the name means ‘New Town’, Novgorod existed back in the 9th century and for 600 years was Russia’s most pioneering artistic and political centre. Today, it is mainly known for its history with some of the most diverse and beautiful architecture in the country. The city is easily accessible as a day trip or overnight from St Petersburg which is just 3 hours away on the main road connecting St Petersburg and Moscow.
These enchanting towns are located along the old Middle Age trades routes between Russia’s two centres of civilisation; Kiev in the South and Novgorod in the North. The nearby Volga River meant prosperity through trade and today these cities of the Golden Ring have been called “open air museums” with classic Russian architecture from the 12th – 18th centuries including kremlins (forts) and places of worship.
